Ajax (asynchronous JavaScript and XML), or AJAX, is a group of interrelated web development techniques used for creating interactive web applications or rich Internet applications. With Ajax, web applications can retrieve data from the server asynchronously in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. Data is retrieved using the XMLHttpRequest object or through the use of Remote Scripting in browsers that do not support it. Despite the name, the use of JavaScript, XML, or its asynchronous use is not required. Ajax applications can use XML, and they can be updated asynchronously. These are quite common tricks and techniques used to update the page, but they are not restricted to these technologies.

Ajax is "a set of programming techniques," "a particular approach to Web programming." How you achieve these objectives on the client is up to developers. AJAX must use the development method of

  • XHTML and CSS
  • The Document Object Model (DOM)
  • JavaScript
  • XML and XSLT
  • The XMLHttpRequest object

In reality, to create an application using Ajax techniques we need only three of these: XHTML, the DOM, and JavaScript. But with amount of development with Ajax techniques, we almost certainly need to use all of the technologies at some point and we do need a server-side language to handle any interaction with the server.
